Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care offers therapeutic services which we are required by Medicare to make available to our patients, as well as some additional therapies.
The Medicare-required therapies are provided by specialists who offer speech, physical and occupational assistance to our patients. Speech-language pathologists (also known as speech therapists) assess a patient’s communication and swallowing abilities and provide care to allow the most meaningful and self-sufficient time possible. Physical and occupational therapists evaluate mobility and dexterity, and provide care to enable individuals to achieve the highest degree of independence at this important time.
We also offer therapeutic services in addition to those required by Medicare, including massage therapy, music therapy, art enrichment, Reiki, acupuncture, guided visualization, pet services, and dietary services. These services can make a tremendous difference in the quality of life and the outlook of the patient and are offered at no charge.
Massage therapy can assist with reducing muscle tension, pain, anxiety and stress, and increasing relaxation.
Reiki is a Japanese technique that can provide stress reduction and relaxation.
Acupuncture is a component of the health care system of China that can be traced back at least 2,500 years. It has been shown to relieve nausea, constipation and vomiting, and regulate digestion, which can be affected with the use of pain medications.
Guided visualization is utilized by patients to “visit” places or “engage” in activities when they no longer have the physical stamina to participate or to fulfill their “bucket” lists.
Art enrichment provides opportunities for self-expression, socialization, life review, and creative expression.
As dietary and nutrition needs change, our dietician can provide assistance and guidance.
We can assist in pet care and placing pets in new homes, and may be able to provide pet visits, allowing patients to experience the unconditional love of a therapy dog or other animal.
Not all services are available in all areas of Chautauqua County. However, we make every effort to provide those services that are requested by our patients and families or those that would benefit the patient the most.
Music therapy is an important part of the care that CHPC provides every day:
